Favourite NHL Betting Options for Bodog Bettors
When you’re surfing the NHL lines at Bodog Sportsbook, you might be looking for a chance to bet on your favourite team – or maybe your favourite player. There are dozens of different bet types on the NHL odds board; no matter what you’re in the market for, you’ll find it at Bodog.
To give you a taste of what other people are betting on, we’ve put together some Top 10 lists for you. First off, we have the 10 most popular teams for NHL bets here at Bodog following the 2024-2025 campaign:
- Toronto Maple Leafs – They live at the centre of the Canadian hockey universe, and the Leafs have been a winning (regular-season) team since 2016, thanks to the arrival of Brendan Shanahan as team president. Will Toronto finally win another Stanley Cup this year?
- Edmonton Oilers – Wayne Gretzky’s former team is still beloved across much of Canada, and last year, after a painfully long rebuilding period, the Oilers were one game away from winning their first Cup since 1990.
- Vancouver Canucks – One of these days, residents of Canada’s third-largest city will see their team hoist the Cup. The Canucks are on the good foot with Rick Tocchet as head coach after making the playoffs for just the second time since 2015.
- Vegas Golden Knights – The NHL’s second-newest expansion team made an instant splash by reaching the Cup finals in 2018, then won it all in 2023. Vegas has been given every advantage for continued success going forward.
- Colorado Avalanche – Just two seasons removed from their most recent Cup win, the Avalanche still enjoy a small following in Quebec City, where they played as the Nordiques until 1995.
- Boston Bruins – Why are the Bruins here, but not the mighty Montreal Canadiens? Because while Montreal rebuilds, the B’s have been a Cup threat for almost 20 years running. Having all those fans in the Maritimes helps.
- New York Rangers – This “Original Six” team has put together three straight impressive seasons, reaching the Eastern Conference Finals twice, and they look even better since Peter Laviolette became their coach last year.
- Tampa Bay Lightning – Those back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021 already seem like a long time ago, after Tampa Bay got knocked out in the first round of the 2023 and 2024 playoffs.
- Winnipeg Jets – Winnipeg gets the nod over both the Calgary Flames and the Ottawa Senators, thanks to eight consecutive winning seasons. Let’s see if new head coach Scott Arniel can keep this plane in the air.
- Florida Panthers – The reigning Stanley Cup champions have finally won their first title. Now, thanks in large part to the league’s salary cap, the Panthers have already lost several key players from their championship team to free agency.
Next up, we have the Top 10 most popular kinds of NHL betting here at Bodog, starting with the three classic “single” or “straight” bets in hockey:
- Moneyline
- Puck line and alternate
- Total goals and Team goals
- Anytime goalscorer
- Requested specials
- Regulation time moneyline
- First goalscorer
- Total Shots on goal – player
- Who will score 2 or more goals
- Anytime goalscorers parlay
NHL Best Bets
NHL Moneyline Bets
The NHL moneyline is the most basic way to bet on hockey – simply pick which team is going to win. Here’s an example of what you’ll find on the NHL lines at Bodog:
Edmonton Oilers –115
Florida Panthers +102
This is Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup finals. The Oilers were –115 road favourites on the NHL odds board using the American odds format; they would have paid out $100 for every $115 wagered, but it was the underdog Panthers paying $102 for every $100 with their 2-1 victory.
NHL Picks and Parlays
When you’re surfing the NHL lines and odds at Bodog, you can combine multiple bets into a single NHL parlay. Get all your NHL parlay picks correct, and your winnings will be multiplied instead of added together; it only takes one wrong pick for the entire parlay to lose, which is why it’s good to have our Parlay Protection in place when you’re putting together your NHL picks and parlays.
NHL Spreads – Puck Line
Football and basketball have the point spread, which you’re probably familiar with; the equivalent NHL point spread is called the puck line. Here’s how that Game 7 would have looked on our NHL odds board:
Edmonton Oilers +1.5 (–300)
Florida Panthers –1.5 (+250)
The Oilers may have lost on the moneyline, but they beat the NHL spreads – Florida needed to win by more than 1.5 goals to cover the spread and pay out at +250. Instead, it was Edmonton returning $100 for every $300 wagered.
NHL Over Under Betting
Total bets (aka over/under bets) do more business on the NHL odds board than they do for the other major sports. NHL over/under bets ask how many goals the two teams will combine to score, with the total usually set at somewhere around 5 to 6 goals. Here’s that Game 7 again:
Edmonton Oilers O 5 (–142)
Florida Panthers U 5 (+122)
Florida won 2-1, so in this case, the under cashed in and paid $122 for every $100 wagered. Note: During the regular season, shootout winners are assigned one goal when determining the final score.
NHL Prop Bets
Here’s where you bet on all those superstar players. NHL prop bets (short for “proposition” bets) allow you to wager on things other than the outcome of the game, like who will score the first goal. These are quickly becoming the most popular bets on the entire NHL odds list at Bodog.
NHL Futures Bets
NHL odds and lines aren’t just for single games. You can bet on things like who will win the next Stanley Cup by visiting the NHL futures page at Bodog. NHL future bets are also available for who will win each conference and each division, as well as who will win the major individual awards like the Hart Trophy.
NHL Live Betting
The betting doesn’t stop when they drop the puck. NHL live betting continues at Bodog while the game is in progress; the list of NHL live bets you can make includes picking which team and which player will score next, alongside odds updated in real time for the moneyline, puck line and total.
NHL Playoff Odds
Because the Cup is on the line, the playoffs odds at NHL games are even busier than they are during the regular season. You can make all of the same types of bets you see above, but the totals for NHL playoffs odds tend to be lower, since goals are harder to come by. The betting value also tends to go up for the underdogs – especially when they face a popular team like Toronto.
NHL Draft and Division Betting
As mentioned above, the NHL is divided into two conferences (Eastern, Western) and four divisions (Atlantic and Metropolitan in the East; Central and Pacific in the West). Each division is like a mini-league of its own; NHL divisional odds are typically available throughout the year at Bodog, even during the summer months.
NHL Draft odds are also available during the offseason to scratch that hockey itch. Who will be taken first overall? Which player will your favourite team select? All this and more is waiting for you on Bodog’s NHL odds board.
NHL Stanley Cup and Other Awards
No other sport does trophies the way the NHL does. Every kid in Canada grows up dreaming about the Stanley Cup, which is why the Stanley Cup odds are such a big deal, but those individual awards like the Hart and the Art Ross Trophy are absolutely gorgeous in their own right. Let’s wrap up our NHL betting guide here at Bodog Sportsbook by looking at the top silverware that’s up for grabs, and remember: Always keep your stick on the ice.
NHL Team Awards
First up, we have the four biggest awards that each team can win, starting with the biggest on the NHL odds board:
- Stanley Cup – Introduced in 1892-93 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, this iconic trophy was eventually named after the man who donated it: Lord Stanley of Preston.
- Prince of Wales Trophy – This beauty has been around since 1926; it now goes to the winner of the Eastern Conference finals.
- Clarence S. Campbell Bowl – The Western equivalent of the Prince of Wales Trophy, created in 1967 and named after the former league president.
- Presidents’ Trophy – Since 1986, the league’s regular-season champions have received the Presidents’ Trophy (they got the Wales Trophy until 1967). Their odds to win the Stanley Cup may look good, but only eight of these winners have gone on to claim the championship.
NHL Individual Awards
Finally, we have the full list of individual NHL awards that are handed out every year. Betting lines will only be available at Bodog for the most important awards like the Hart, but any hockey player would be rightly proud to display any of these in their trophy case.
- Hart Memorial Trophy – Awarded since 1960 to the league’s Most Valuable Player; named after David Hart, who donated the original trophy.
- Lady Byng Memorial Trophy – For the player with the best combination of sporting behaviour and playing ability. Lady Byng donated the trophy in 1925.
- Vezina Trophy – Introduced in 1926 following the untimely death of Georges Vezina; since 1982-83, awarded to the goalie “adjudged to be the best at this position.”
- Calder Memorial Trophy – Given to the NHL’s top rookie since 1936-37; named after Frank Calder, the league’s first president.
- Art Ross Trophy – First awarded in 1947-48 to the league’s top point scorer, and donated to the league by Art Ross, former player/coach/GM and hockey builder.
- James Norris Memorial Trophy – Since 1953-54, the top defenders in the NHL have received the Norris Trophy, named after the former Detroit Red Wings owner.
- Conn Smythe Trophy – Arguably the second-most important trophy in hockey, the Conn Smythe (named after the former Leafs owner) has been awarded since 1964-65 to the Most Valuable Player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Other NHL awards available to be won:
- Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy
- Ted Lindsay Award
- Jack Adams Award
- Frank J. Selke Trophy
- William M. Jennings Trophy
- King Clancy Memorial Trophy
- Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy
- Mark Messier Leadership Award
- Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award
- E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence
